A Brand New Store, Ho Hum
Published on September 4, 2012 by Sara Foss

Over at the DG, I write about my general lack of enthusiasm over new chain stores, even if they're supposed to be hipper-than-average, like Trader Joe's.

Here's an excerpt:

"I was so excited when I learned that Wal-Mart planned to build a store in Niskayuna’s Mansion Square shopping center that I did a dance of joy.

It was similar to the celebration I held when I learned that Trader Joe’s was opening in Colonie, that Whole Foods was coming to Colonie Center and that ShopRite plans to open four stores in the Capital Region.

'Awesome!' I thought. 'More grocery stores!'

I mean, I thought I was doing OK, what with the Hannaford, Price Chopper and food co-op all relatively close to my apartment, but clearly I have been missing out. Although I’m not sure on what.

Actually, I’ll be honest: I have yet to visit any of these new stores, and I’ll probably avoid the stores that have yet to open, too. Because if there’s one thing I just can’t get excited about, it’s a big new chain store, and the prospect of driving out to the suburbs (which is where these stores are generally built) to buy stuff. Every time one of these places opens, I feel like an alien, because I cannot relate to the wild enthusiasm that seems to accompany each new store."
