Things in the media change so fast that if you don't write about a story in 24 hours, it is too late. Unless of course it isn't. There are three scandals that President Obama has had to deal with recently: The Secret Service hiring hookers in Columbia, the General Services Administration's lavish spending at a Las Vegas resort and a Democratic strategist's poorly received comments about Ann Romney.
Scandal One: Secret Service agents partying it up with hookers in Columbia. Two thoughts on this: Was there cocaine involved? and Do you think this scandal will help recruit more young men to become secret service agents? Maybe we should just get some Nevada prostitutes to travel with the Secret Service. Or is this diplomacy in action? Americans use other countries' prostitutes, and to thank them, we give the other country free trade and other perks, such as blue jeans and movies? Assuming the other countries still want our blue jeans and movies. Perhaps by partying with the local talent we buy security for our leader?
Scandal Two: The GSA spends $823,000 plus partying it up in Las Vegas. Two thoughts on this: Was cocaine purchased with this money? Do you think in the long run more smart young people will want to work for the GSA? Because let's be honest: If I told you that you had an all expense paid trip to Las Vegas, would you take it? In a second, right? Forget your other weekend plans - Vegas, baby!
While some of the billions of the stimulus plan have been wasted, $823,000 for a trip to Vegas sounds like a reasonable amount of money for 300 people in Vegas - a little under $3,000 per person, and it helps the Vegas tourist-driven economy. OK, $3,000 per person sounds a bit excessive, but they did get some work done while they were there. And maybe they didn't get any discounts - maybe they paid retail for everything. But consider how many top young graduates are now going to pass on Wall Street to work for the GSA.
Scandal Three: A Democratic strategist says that Ann Romney doesn't know what it's like to be a working woman. I swear, I'm having deja vu on this one, like I've heard this scandal before. OK, one person said this. But people are reacting as if the entire Democratic Party said it. President Obama had to come in and say that he personally supports "Stay-at-Home moms." OK, I understand this is how it works - if one Democratic strategist speaks, then it is if the entire Democratic Party spoke. I guess if this Democratic strategist had said something profound - like the meaning of life and the key to fixing the economy and for some reason everyone, even Ron Paul supporters, believed her, it would reflect on the entire Democratic Party and not just Hilary Rosen?
Sadly, as far as I know, this scandal lacks cocaine or prostitutes. So I have no further interest in it. Nonetheless, I think all women would like to have the choice to be stay-at-home moms. Ann Romney and Michelle Obama both had that choice. Not all women do.
